We had a perfect tour of Hoi An with Lam and his trainee Thinh. These young guys were generous with their knowledge of Vietnamese life and were delightful companions as we toured the streets for five hours eating street food and in small restaurants, laughing a lot and traveling at an easy pace. Lam is bright, sensitive, sincere and respectful, loves a joke and knows how to sort out IT problems (he’s an IT graduate). And, importantly, for our tour, he had sorted out some great food stops that helped to demystify the local cuisine. Lam loves his job in part, as he says, because while he is helping visitors to get to know his country, he is also helping his people to earn a living. It was simply great.
